How do I compare portable electric coffee grinders before buying?
Compare confirmed specifications, the cleaning and calibration behaviour, and the evidence behind every performance claim — not the number of settings. A wide setting range tells you the mechanism travels that far, nothing more.
A setting scale describes the range the mechanism can traverse. It does not tell you how consistent the resulting particle distribution is, and it says nothing about how the grinder behaves at the two ends of that range.
So the first question is not “how many settings” but “which values are confirmed, and which are still being validated”. A supplier who can answer that clearly is easier to work with than one who can only repeat a brochure.
Cleaning access. If the burr chamber cannot be reached without tools, customers will not clean it, and the complaints arrive three months later.
Calibration stability. A grinder that drifts between sessions makes recipes unrepeatable. Ask how the setting is retained and how the zero point is set.
Battery behaviour at low charge. Performance at 20 percent charge is what customers actually experience, not the fresh-from-charge number on a specification sheet.
Noise in a real room. A laboratory measurement is useful, but customers use these in kitchens and offices. Ask for the measurement distance and the ambient noise level, or the figure means very little.
For each performance statement, ask three questions: what was measured, how was it measured, and how many times. A retention figure without a stated dose size and a repeat count is not a measurement, it is an adjective.
This is also a commercial protection. If you publish a performance claim that your supplier cannot document, the returns and the reviews land on your brand, not theirs.
Portable electric grinders are usually at their best in the pour-over range. If the mechanism cannot reach a genuinely fine setting with control, do not market it for espresso. Positioning a product outside its capability is the most expensive mistake in this category, because it produces returns rather than reviews.
Request a sample, and run it against whatever you consider the reference in your own range. Grind the beans you actually sell, at the settings your customers will use. If the sample holds up, the specification conversation becomes much shorter.

Where a statement could not be verified it is presented as a consideration rather than a fact.
